Throughout the winter months, the construction crew has been working diligently to transform parking lot 7 into the much-desired RFK Campus fields. The site work is ongoing in preparation for the artificial turf fields’ installation, including the assembly of new light poles that will allow for continued play after the sun goes down. The project has a certified business enterprise rate tracking at 40 percent and is scheduled to be substantially completed by late spring 2019.
Events DC continues to keep environmental safety top of mind during this construction phase. More than 130 soil samples have been collected and tested with 90 percent defined as non-hazardous waste and 10 percent characterized as hazardous waste. In collaboration with DOEE and NPS, a remediation plan has been in effect that includes hauling excavated soil to facilities outside Washington, DC, depositing clean fill for planting areas, and testing and relocating ground water. Our contractors are also watering the site at least six times per day to help prevent construction dust from blowing around and exiting the site. Additionally, there is an on-going air monitoring system in place along the perimeter fence that has not detected any contaminants, including lead.
A request for proposal has been issued (http://eventsdc.com/AboutUs/VendorResources.aspx) to engage an operator for the fields. This entity will be responsible for the day-to-day schedule, overseeing sports programming and field utilization and develop policies, procedures and rental rate structure. Events DC will coordinate facility maintenance and security as well as program large scale events in conjunction with the operator.
The Multipurpose Fields Advisory Committee will continue to meet on a regular basis and all are welcome to join these meetings, which is currently being scheduled for May.
