Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival
On Saturday, May 4, the Kingman Island Bluegrass Festival provided a rejuvenating, breath of fresh air experience that seamlessly carried you away from the hustle and bustle of the District. We’re not sure if it was the excitement of walking into the natural beauty of the island or the sound of festival goers’ steps as they crossed the wooden bridge over the Anacostia River, but from the moment we left Lot 6 on RFK Campus, we were sold. This festival is the escape many Washingtonians need in the hyperconnected world we live in today.Read more

While we are sad to see them go, we are excited to have hosted Summit Point Kart (SPK) Capital Raceway on our campus as a way to introduce recreational amenities to you, our neighbors, as well as attract out-of-town visitors to the District. We’re looking forward to focusing our attention on the development of our multi-purpose fields and activating the Campus as the re-opening of Lot 8 presents an opportunity for future programs and events to utilize that space. Keep an eye on our website, social media channels, and this newsletter for future updates, and please join us in wishing the SPK Capital Raceway team happy trails.
The first phase of the short-term RFK Campus redevelopment continues, with significant progress being made on the new multi-purpose recreational fields. We are currently working on asphalt demolition, soil removal, grading and field drainage, forming foundations for light poles and other structures, as well as installing site utilities.
All redevelopment is being implemented through environmental remediation plans as approved by the District’s Department of the Environment (DOEE) and the National Park Service (NPS). All excavated soil and groundwater encountered are being hauled-off and disposed of at appropriate facilities. Clean fill will be brought in and geotextile fabric barriers installed throughout the site. Construction workers have been properly trained to handle soils. (Workers are wearing Tyvek suits as an additional precautionary measure.) Over 118 soil samples have been collected and tested by Events DC’s environmental engineers. Air monitoring along the perimeter fence will continue throughout construction.
As you may know, since the relocation of D.C. United to its new home at Audi Field, Events DC has been planning the future of the RFK Campus with critical community input focused on short term programming and development. The new fields will transform 27-acres of asphalt into three new state-of-the-art artificial turf fields for recreational and community use, including a youth soccer field, two baseball/softball diamonds, two full soccer fields, and two lacrosse fields. Visitors can take in all the action from bleacher seating that will hold up to 300 people, in addition to a picnic area and playground.
The development of the multi-purpose fields continues to be on time and on budget, with expected delivery in late spring of this year. Did you know you can follow the progress in real-time via a live webcam of the construction site? We will continue to make updates on our website as they become available; or, continue to check our social media accounts for progress reports.
