Community Spotlight: Unity Health Care

Unity Health Care combines compassion with comprehensive health and human services to promote healthier families and stronger communities. With more than 20 traditional and nontraditional health centers, as well as a medical outreach mobile unit, they provide a wide variety of health care needs to District residents, regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.

Unity managed the health expo at the Safeway Feast of Sharing in November, and we are delighted to feature them in this month’s Community Spotlight. We spoke with Audrey White, Director of Corporate and Community Relations, about Unity’s work to keep DC residents healthy.

How did Unity Health Care get its start?

From the start, Unity Health Care has been committed to serving the health needs of our communities. Originally founded in 1985 as Health Care for the Homeless Project (HCHP), HCHP provided primary health care services to homeless individuals and families that resided in local emergency shelters or on the streets of the District of Columbia. In 1997, HCHP officially changed its name to Unity Health Care as care expanded from serving people experiencing homelessness to providing primary and specialty care to District residents. Over the past three decades we have grown into a network of over 20 traditional and non-traditional health centers.
